Literary Thesis

Guidelines for an Effective Thesis

GUIDELINES  FOR AN  EFFECTIVE  THESIS:-

As  your  knowledge  grows  and  your  thinking  changes,  rewrite  your  thesis  following  these  guidelines:-

Write  a  declarative  sentence,  or  several  sentences  if  necessary,  but  not  a  question.  If   all  you  can  write  is  a  question,  you   are  not  ready  to  write  a  thesis.  Answer   your  questions  first.

Be  sure  that  you  have  written  a  thesis  statement   rather  than  a  purpose  statement.

A  thesis  statement  focuses  on  your  topic  and  says  something  about  it.

A  purpose  statement  focuses  on  your  paper  and  says  something  about  it  rather  than  your  topic.

Be  sure  your  thesis  is  supported  by  the  facts  and  other  details  that  you  have  gathered.

Replace  vague  words  with  specific  words  that  say  precisely  what  you  mean.  Avoid  generalizations.

Beware  of  writing  a  “So?”  thesis.  For  example;  Much  urban  and  suburban  travel  by  car  is  unnecessary.  “So?  What’s  the  point?  Should  something  be  done  about  this  unnecessary  travel?  What?”  Make  a  complete  assertion  about   your  topic.

After  you  have  written  your  essay,  cut  the  “My  point  is  that……………  .”  formula  as  you  revise,  keeping  only  your  actual  assertion  in  mind.  The  formula  has  helped  you  make  a  point,  but  readers  won’t  need  it  to  get  your  point.
